On Monday, Nov. 3, the Torre dei Conti, located near Rome’s Colosseum, partially collapsed twice. One worker was pulled from the rubble after being trapped inside. He was conscious during the rescue and taken to a local hospital in critical condition, but later died.
Four other workers were evacuated. Three were trapped at the top of the tower and later rescued by the Rome Fire Brigade. Another was rescued from inside the structure.
Renovations on the 13th-century Torre dei Conti began in June 2025. The tower, originally built by Pope Innocent III, had been abandoned for years. An investigation is ongoing.
