Rise in number of typhoons of 'serious concern' — climate expert
The rise in the number of typhoons hitting the Philippines this year is of “serious concern,” said a climate expert in the region, who warned there may be more storms before the end of the year.
"Recent events across the region show that there is an uptick in these typhoons. So it's something of serious concern as our oceans warm and climate change has more and more impacts on our communities,” said Professor Adam Switzer based in Singapore’s Asian School of the Environment at the Nanyang Technological University.
Switzer spoke to Reuters on Monday, November 10, as one of the year's most powerful storms in the Philippines, Super Typhoon Uwan has killed at least four people, authorities said.
The storm is the 21st this year in the Philippines, coming after Typhoon Tino killed 224 last week, with five dead in Vietnam.
