Kenyan bird lover Rodgers Oloo Magutha has dedicated his life to rescuing and rehabilitating injured wild birds, earning the affectionate nickname 'Nairobi Birdman.'
Footage from Saturday shows the bird rescuer strolling through the Kenyan capital with a black kite hawk perched on his head. Locals can be seen gathering around as brave onlookers interacted with the hunter bird.
"I am a bird lover, bird enthusiast and a bird rescuer," Magutha emphasised. "I rescue endangered, abandoned birds, and rehabilitate them until they become healthy."
27-year-old Magutha spent over 10 years living on the streets as a child, a hardship that nurtured his empathy and inspired his unusual friendship with birds.
"During my leisure time, we used to sneak inside the park where we could watch the birds, explore nature and look at the lake. My love for birds started while I was at the lake," he recalled.
According to Magutha, some view his work as an act of 'witchcraft or sorcery,' due to cultural prejudice against birds. However, his community embraces his efforts.
"We appreciate the work that 'birdman' does, because he is helping the birds in the streets," said Nicholas Osogo, a local. "He is doing a really good job. If there were several people like him, the birds in our area would be okay."
Moving forward, Magutha aspires to some day open a family centre and a bird rescue and rehabilitation centre, aiming to save both vulnerable homeless children and urban wildlife.
