More than 50,000 people have been displaced from Cambodian border towns after renewed and intense military clashes with Thailand erupted this week in Banteay Meanchey province. Continuous artillery fire, destroyed homes, and sudden fighting forced families from villages such as Chauk Chhey and Tomnup Aach to escape with only their children and whatever belongings they could carry.

At temporary shelters in Mongkol Borey, hundreds of families sit on the floor, rest in tents, and wash outdoors as they wait for updates on the conflict. Many describe fleeing under heavy fire, with villagers reporting homes reduced to rubble and livestock left behind. Some arrived on tractors packed with basic supplies after long, overheated rides through traffic jams.

Displaced residents say they hope for peace so they can return to their farms, collect unharvested crops, and reunite with their animals. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation as tensions between Cambodia and Thailand remain high following days of cross-border shelling.
