Police have arrested six people for allegedly cheating NRIs living abroad by offering fake subscriptions to Indian, Pakistani and other international OTT platforms at discounted rates. The accused copied original OTT content and sold illegal subscriptions through online platforms.
According to the police, the gang charged between $100 and $300 per subscription. In many cases, the subscriptions were terminated after a short period, following which victims were repeatedly asked to pay money for reactivation.
The accused were operating under the name “Web Biz Service LLC” from the Phase 1 police station area. Using internet calls, they contacted NRIs and provided them with fake OTT channels and unauthorised subscriptions.
The arrested accused have been identified as Tanishka, Anil Baghel, Manish Kumar Tripathi, Gaurav, Radha Ballabh and Yogesh Baghel, all aged between 20 and 30 years.
During the raid, police recovered 20 mobile phones, five CPUs, five computer monitors, one laptop, six keyboards and other electronic equipment.
Investigations revealed that pirated content from platforms such as Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video, Zee5, Voot Select, Sony LIV, ALTBalaji, MX Player, JioCinema, HBO and Hulu, along with recent movie releases, was illegally captured and rebroadcast without any licence.
Further investigation in the case is underway.
