The Illusion — Together (As A Way of Life) 1969 (USA, Garage, Psychedelic, Hard Rock)
The band's second album, recorded in just three days, was co-written and produced by the same producer from the first album, Jeff Barry, who smoothed out the band's (in his opinion) overly harsh sound. It's hard to imagine what "The Illusion" would have sounded like if they'd been given the chance to tweak the controls themselves. Perhaps they were haunted by the hard rock laurels of Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, who were simultaneously playing the hardest card in rock music. However, the songs on "The Illusion" are fundamentally different in structure from those bands and are good in their own right. The album "Together (As A Way Of Life)" remains, musically and lyrically, a romantic psychedelic album of the late 1960s, even in its title. It features abundant harmonious group singing, lyrical melodies, and soft, unadorned rhythm guitar, though there are also plenty of acidic guitar solos. The album is quite diverse melodically and compositionally, with many tracks hypnotic and literally captivating. In fact, it's astonishing how many interesting albums could be recorded in just three days in the 1960s. Clearly, "The Illusion" had a wealth of original material—there aren't a single cover on the album. The record exudes a creative spirit and is a delightful gem for lovers of not just sixties music, but music made from the heart and for the heart...
