A dramatic moment from the Great Migration shows herds gathering at the river’s edge, hesitating before making a dangerous crossing.
Sohail Suleman also nicknamed Sully, a private safari guide and wildlife photographer who lives in the Maasai Mara, Kenya, filmed the footage in the Maasai Mara National Reserve during peak migration season.
Sully has witnessed over 300 river crossings, including: Zebras, wildebeests, buffalo, and hippos crowd the riverbanks on this occasion, all driven by the search for fresh grazing.
Instinct takes over. One animal commits. The rest follow.
Each crossing is tense, unpredictable, and completely unscripted.
In one clip, the buffalo are in the water surrounded by lions, awaiting to make their move.
Sully said: “The zebras were gathering at the river’s edge, deciding whether it was safe to cross.
“They were trying to reach better grazing, but the Mara River always forces hesitation.
“As a guide, you learn to read the small cues - who’s nervous and who might lead.
“Once the first animal commits, everything changes.
“That uncertainty is what makes every crossing unique. It never plays out the same way twice.
“I’ve guided through 11 migration seasons and witnessed around 300 river crossings.
“There are zebras, wildebeests, buffalo, and hippos all moving together.
“It’s instinctive, risky, and completely real.”
