A BBC investigation has revealed that over 6,000 high consequence flood barriers meant to protect homes, businesses, and lives are damaged, eroded, or overgrown.
In some areas, like North Tyneside and Brentwood, over 40% of defences are failing. Even the Thames corridor is at serious risk.
Locals in Leicestershire were left to dig their own trenches as floodwaters surged towards their homes – with no help from water companies or councils.
