A recent study by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research, and the Free University of Brussels revealed alarming projections on global glacier loss. Researchers estimate that between 2,000 and 4,000 glaciers could vanish each year due to global warming. The Alps are expected to suffer the greatest losses between 2033 and 2041. If global temperatures rise by 2.7 degrees, only 110 glaciers may remain in Central Europe by 2100—just 3 percent of today’s total. A 4.0 degree increase could reduce that number to around 20.
