It Flew Away — Pull Out All The Stops 1972 (Australia, Psychedelic, Progressive Rock)
An Australian band from Prahran (a suburb of Melbourne), formed in 1971. The band's first performance took place in early December of that same year, supporting the blues-rock band Carson in Ocean Grove, a coastal town on the outskirts of Melbourne. This was followed by performances at Evolution (a massive Australian dance festival held in its very heart – Rosebud on the Mornington Peninsula). On New Year's Eve 1972, It Flew Away played the Regent Theatre in South Yarra (also a suburb of Melbourne) alongside Spectrum, Friends, Carl & Janie Myriad, Blackfeather, and The Joy Band. Throughout 1972, It Flew Away promoted their music wherever they could. With the help of a booking agency symbolically named Let It Be, the musicians secured bookings at such popular venues as Sebastians, the Q Club, the Much More Ballroom, various local schools, and dance parties. They even began visiting other cities across the country, including Adelaide, Sydney, and Newcastle, accepting every invitation. It was during this time in Sydney that the band visited the ABC studios (the government-funded television channel), where they performed their hits "Candy Meets the Vibrator" and "Aimless Pasture," and also performed another song during the broadcast of the popular music show known as G.T.K. They also won a popular rock band competition in Mildura, on the banks of the Murray River, and seemed to have achieved some recognition, including among critics in the music press. But it all ended badly. The Regent Theatre burned down, and the Much More Ballroom closed. After these tragic events, the band invested their own money in a promising project called D.S.H., but who would have thought – after several injections of money, the latter went bankrupt! By early 1973, they were literally sitting on the floor of Phil Dwyer, a small music store and studio, at a loss for words. They certainly didn't garner much sympathy in this state, nor did they find support from the band's nascent fans, and ultimately, "It Flew Away" disappeared from the rock scene as quickly and unexpectedly as they had arrived. A final attempt to play in bars and pubs to make ends meet also failed. 01. On My Way Home - 0:00
