時は大正。「はいからさん」こと花村紅緒は竹刀、大槍を握れば向かうところ敵なし、跳ねっ返りのじゃじゃ馬娘。ある日、美形の青年将校・伊集院忍が祖父母の代からの許嫁と聞かされ、伊集院家に行儀見習いに出される。結婚に反発する紅緒は、破談にしようと数々の騒動を巻き起こすが、聡明で心優しき伊集院に惹かれ、やがて相思相愛の仲となっていく。

The era is Taisho. Hanamura Kōo, known as “the wild child,” is a spirited tomboy who is unbeatable when wielding a bamboo sword or a spear. One day, she learns that the handsome young officer Ijūin Shinobu is her betrothed from her grandparents' generation and is sent to the Ijūin household to learn proper manners. Resisting the marriage, Kōo causes numerous disturbances in an attempt to break it off. However, she becomes drawn to the intelligent and kind-hearted Ijūin, and they eventually fall deeply in love.
