Down Syndrome happens when a baby is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. This is called Trisomy 21. It usually happens by chance when the cells divide, not because of anything parents did. The risk may increase with older maternal age, but it can happen at any age. Down Syndrome is a genetic condition, not an illness.
