Explosions, loud noises heard in Venezuelan capital
Explosions, loud noises and columns of smoke are heard and seen in the Venezuelan capital Caracas in the early morning of Jan. 3, according to Reuters witnesses, and the southern area of the city, near a major military base, was without electricity. A video obtained by Reuters showed multiple blasts lighting up the night sky in the distance, followed by loud explosions and columns of smoke rising. The location was verified from the mountains, pylons and buildings seen in the video which matched satellite imagery of Caracas. The date was verified by multiple corroborating videos of strikes on Caracas. US President Donald Trump has repeatedly promised land operations in Venezuela, amid efforts to pressure his counterpart Nicolas Maduro to leave office, including expanded sanctions, a ramped-up US military presence in the region and more than two dozen strikes on vessels allegedly involved in trafficking drugs in the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. The Pentagon did not immediately respond to request for comment.
