O.P. & The Phantom Band — O.P. & The Phantom Band 1976 (Denmark, Psychedelic, Progressive Rock)
The emergence of this band and its only self-titled album was largely facilitated by Danish singer, composer, and guitarist Ole Prehn, and this is essentially his solo album. Even earlier, for nine years, Ole Prehn was quite active as a popular rock musician, serving as a mainstay in the domestic bands Day of Phoenix and Moirana. “The Phantom Band” is a completely different group, whose lineup, in addition to its founder, has at various times included several other well-known Danish musicians: Kenneth Knudsen (keyboards), Palle Mikkelborg (trumpet), Kasper Winding (drums, percussion), Nils Henriksen (guitar), Terje Barnholt (percussion), Joachim Ussing (bass), and Carsten Lyng (guitar, keyboards). Seven of the eight tracks on this album were written by Ole Prehn himself, the eighth was written by Neil Young. Neil Young, in fact, is arguably the composer who inspired Ole Prehn and instilled his style in him, but as one reviewer said, “Ole Prehn sounds like Neil Young should have sounded today.” The album’s release day (Thursday, November 11th) also saw the band premiere their live performance at the popular Daddy’s Dance Hall in Copenhagen. The band appeared on stage in a slightly modified form: Ole Prehn (guitar), Nils Henriksen (guitar), Thor Backhausen (keyboards), Terje Barnholt (drums) and Joachim Ussing (bass). But, unfortunately, the names of famous and popular musicians alone couldn't guarantee this new Danish rock band international success...
