1歳で両親を亡くし、5歳になるまで母方の叔母のデーテに育てられたハイジは、デーテの仕事の都合で、アルム（高原の放牧地）の山小屋にひとりで住んでいる、父方の実の祖父であるおじいさん（アルムおんじ）に預けられることになる。過去に過ちを犯したおじいさんは信仰に背を向け他者との繋がりを断っていたがハイジを受け入れる。ヤギ飼いの少年ペーター、ペーターのおばあさんなどの人々、子ヤギのユキちゃん、おじいさんが飼っている犬のヨーゼフやヤギのシロ・クマ、樅の木を初めとした、大自然に生きる動植物達。厳しくも優しく、懐の深さを感じさせるアルプスの大自然。何より、共に暮らすおじいさんを通じ、ハイジは様々なことを知り、学び、健やかに育っていく。

Heidi, who lost both parents at age one and was raised by her maternal aunt Dete until age five, is sent to live with her paternal grandfather, the old man of the Alm (a mountain pasture hut), who lives alone there due to Dete's work commitments. Though the old man had committed a past mistake, turning his back on faith and severing ties with others, he accepts Heidi. She meets Peter, a goat herder boy; Peter's grandmother; the young goat Yukichan; Grandfather's dog Joseph; the goats Shiro and Kuma; and the vast array of flora and fauna living in the great outdoors, starting with the fir trees. The harsh yet gentle, profoundly deep nature of the Alps. Above all, through her life with Grandfather, Heidi learns many things, grows, and thrives.
