Wicked Lady - The Axeman Cometh 1968–1972 (UK, Heavy Psychedelic, Hard Rock)
A compilation of the band's older recordings. Unfortunately, much of the material on "Wicked Lady" was lost.Martin Weaver wanted to push every guitar limit there was. Hard riffs, long and jammy solos, doomy atmosphere, he did it all. Hendrix was the only guitarist at the time who impressed him and you can see it in the way he plays. The band never really reached a high level because every bar that Wicked Lady gave a gig to was destroyed by motorcycle gangs who just wanted to see them drunk. Not only that, I think a bar manager got mad at the band to the point where they kept playing the same riff for over an hour until the manager had to unplug the speakers.
The music of Wicked Lady was elaborated among 1968-1972, then some of the musicians go to play in "Dark" and later in "Mind Doctor".
All this trajectory is pure creation and experimentation of new ways of expression of what will turn into the Doom, Death or other type of dark heavy rock.
It's a simple form based in a sequential evolution of sound with the typical outfit of heavy rock: guitars, bass and drum.
In this aspect Wicked Lady show a slow pace, allowing the lyrics be said clearly, addressing the listener into obscure ambience, quietly and calmed, enjoying each moment of the driving guitars, the melodic bass lines and concentrated drumming.
Some times they go a bit faster, but the interaction of instruments is the same. The musicians with no hurry enjoying the sound and beat.
From time to time guitars give space to bass, and then returning in to the calmed riff.
All this insinuate concentration and love for the music.
My recommendation is: sit and enjoy if you like the sound of the instruments and the voice of Martin Weaver. Do not expect further emotions but simple lyrics and sound. Enjoyable if you want, if not then leave!DaremoS Dec 09 2010
