President Lai Ching-te met with a delegation from the European Parliament on Monday morning, led by Michael Gahler, chair of the European Taiwan Friendship Group. The delegation also included EU Parliament members Sven Simon, Wouter Beke, Christophe Gomart, Marion Walsmann, Iuliu Winkler, Michał Szczerba and Jan Farský.
Speaking to TaiwanPlus, Gahler said the delegation is in Taiwan to “defend the status quo” and deepen cooperation with like-minded democracies.
The delegation is visiting less than three months after Taiwan's Vice President Bi-khim Hsiao was invited by the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC) to give a speech at the European Parliament.
