The Philippines’ capital Manila was closed on Friday, January 9, 2026, because of the Black Nazarene procession, locally known as “Traslacion.”
The annual procession, which draws hundreds of thousands of people from different parts of Metro Manila and neighboring provinces, usually start at dawn at the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park in Manila and would end hours after when the image of the Black Nazarene reaches its home, the Minor Basilica and National Shrine of Jesus Nazareno in Quiapo also in Manila.
For centuries, the charred image of Jesus carrying the cross has been venerated by thousands of devotees every January 9 as it is said to be miraculous. During the procession, devotees scramble to touch the Nazarene or the cross, or ask the men surrounding it to wipe their handkerchiefs on the image.
