Central Japan's Yamanashi prefecture has ordered the evacuation of nearly 150 residents following the outbreak of a forest fire on Mt. Ougi, local media reported on Friday.
As of Friday morning, no damage to infrastructure or surrounding homes had been reported. The Japan Self-Defense Forces deployed several helicopters to assist firefighting efforts, according to national broadcaster NHK.
The fire, first reported around 10:40 a.m. (0140 GMT) on Thursday (January 8) by a resident who noticed smoke on the mountain, had spread at least 150 meters (492 feet) from residential areas as of Friday morning, local fire authorities confirmed.
