Somalia’s government announced on January 12 that it is terminating all agreements with the United Arab Emirates, including key port deals and defense cooperation, accusing the UAE of violating its national sovereignty.
Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Hassan Moallim Mohamud said the decision follows a detailed investigation into breaches of trust and protocols, emphasizing that Somalia will not tolerate foreign interference or deals bypassing the federal government.
The canceled agreements cover ports in Berbera, Bosaso, and Kismayo, as well as bilateral security and defense cooperation. Somalia remains open to revisiting agreements if conditions respecting its sovereignty are met.
