United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday outlined what he described as priorities “not just for this year, but for our times,” offering a stark assessment of the current global situation.
With a new UN secretary-general set to be elected later this year for a term beginning on January 1, 2027, the address marked Guterres’s final opportunity to formally set out his priorities for the organization.
Describing the international environment as increasingly unstable, Guterres said, “The context is chaos. We are a world brimming with conflict, impunity, inequality, and unpredictability.”
He highlighted three core priorities for the United Nations: upholding the UN Charter, pursuing global peace, and fostering unity at a time of deep international division.
