Watch as this mans routine afternoon walk turned into an unexpected wildlife rescue of a helpless baby possum alone on a footpath with a shoe.
Michael Porceddu, a 22-year-old educator from New South Wales, Australia, was walking when he noticed a tiny animal dangerously close to the road.
Realising it was a scared baby possum and highly vulnerable, Michael knew he had to act quickly.
With traffic, cyclists and predators nearby and no bag or spare clothing, he improvised, removing his shoe and gently placing the possum inside to keep it warm and protected.
Michael shared that the possum, estimated to be around three months old, showed no visible injuries but was far too young to survive on its own.
Michael shares that wildlife carers later confirmed that without intervention, it would likely not have made it through the night.
Michael carried the possum home walking for nearly 40 minutes with one shoe, ignoring looks by those passing by.
After contacting the Wildlife organisation, they confirmed they were unable to attend until morning; they advised him to keep the animal safe overnight.
He created a makeshift pouch provided warmth, water, apples, and monitored the possum until carers arrived the next day.
The possum was collected and placed with other young possums and an adult for proper care.
Michael has since received updates confirming the animal is healthy, eating well and thriving.
Michael said: “While out on my usual daily walk, I noticed a tiny baby possum alone and vulnerable on the ground.
“I had no shirt on, just shorts and my shoes. I didn’t know what else to do, so I thought the shoe would be a safe, enclosed place.
“It was really close to the road, bikes were flying past it, and there are lots of cats where I live. I knew it wouldn’t survive the night on its own.
“As soon as it went into the shoe, it settled and went to sleep. It felt safe.
“I contacted wildlife rescue straight away and did everything I could to make sure it got through the night.
“It’s doing really well now, which honestly makes the whole experience even more special.
"It was such a blessing to just see these animals so close up, and the fact that I was able to help it"
