Wildfires continue to devastate Chile’s center-south region, with 20 people confirmed dead and more than 7,000 affected. Authorities report over 26,000 hectares of forest burned across the provinces of Biobío and Ñuble. Most victims are concentrated in Penco and Lirquén, where the destruction of homes and businesses has left a deep social impact. The Secretary of State indicated that 573 people are currently sheltered in 19 refuges, though the number fluctuates. Emergency services are battling 31 active fires, but the deployment of 75 aircraft has been complicated by simultaneous outbreaks in several regions. Containment and damage assessment efforts are ongoing.
