Violent storms battered Catania in Sicily on Tuesday (January 20), causing flooding, sinking a fishing boat in the port, and prompting school closures. Italy’s Protezione Civile issued a red alert for parts of Sicily, warning of torrential rain, hurricane-force winds, and dangerous storm surges.
Heavy seas damaged moored vessels in Catania’s harbour, while firefighters responded to multiple calls linked to flooding and fallen debris. Around 150 municipalities closed schools, and transport along coastal areas was disrupted. Authorities urged residents to stay away from coastal zones and avoid unnecessary travel as the severe weather continues.
