我々人間は、1万ものにおいを嗅ぎ分けられることを知っているだろうか。これは1200万個もの嗅覚受容器細胞のおかげだ。だが、犬は4万のにおいを嗅ぎ分けられる1億～3億の受容器細胞をもっている。においというものは、その人の気分、感情、記憶にかなりの影響を与え、いい香りに包まれているとすばらしい経験を忘れないで幸せな人生を送れるチャンスが増えるということが、研究でわかっている。嗅覚は人間が肉体的・精神的に意識しなくても、味わうことのできる基本的な感覚のひとつなのだ。ところが、日々の生活においてひどいにおいに遭遇せざるをえないこともある。思わず顔をしかめて、反対方向へ逃げたくなるような、怒りすらわいてくるようなにおいだ。ここでは、世界最悪と言われる悪臭をあげてみよう。ただし個人差もあるので、人によってはそのにおいが好きだったりもするからそこんところよろしく。

But dogs possess 100 to 300 million receptor cells, enabling them to distinguish 40,000 scents. Research shows that odors significantly influence a person's mood, emotions, and memories. Being surrounded by pleasant fragrances increases the chance of leading a happy life filled with unforgettable wonderful experiences. Smell is one of the fundamental senses humans can experience without conscious physical or mental effort. Yet, in daily life, we sometimes encounter truly awful smells. The kind that make you grimace involuntarily, want to run in the opposite direction, or even provoke anger. Here, let's list some of the world's worst-smelling odors. Keep in mind, though, that preferences vary; some people might actually like certain smells, so take that into account.
