Macy’s has begun closing U.S. stores as part of a 150-location retrenchment, a shift with employment and mall-traffic implications.
The first 14 Macy’s store closures in Q1 2026 span ten states, with liquidation sales launched in mid-January and final shutdowns expected in roughly 10 weeks.
Confirmed Macy’s layoffs include 1,050 roles at Connecticut fulfillment centers and 89 at New Jersey stores, with thousands more potentially affected as locations wind down.
The “Bold New Chapter” plan announced in February 2024 exits underperforming sites, reinvests in 350 stronger stores, and expands digital operations.
By late 2025, 66 stores were closed.
Macy’s is emphasizing 125 “Reimagine” locations and growth at Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury amid wider U.S. retail consolidation.
