Index — The Red Album 1968 (USA, Garage, Psychedelic Rock)
The second album was recorded in August 1968. By the time it was recorded, the band's lineup had expanded (a new member was added—16-year-old bassist Tom Ballew from Joe's Soul Repair). Thus, Index transformed from a trio into a quartet, and in this lineup, in addition to performing new songs, they decided to re-record several of their older tracks from their debut. Overall, the band's sound became softer. But they were still recorded in the same "amateur" style (this time, albeit in stereo rather than mono) and were still released as before—self-published on the mini-label DC Records. By the fall of 1968, John B. Ford had left for the East Coast on business, and Gary Francis had enrolled at Michigan State College and lost interest in the band. True, it was at this time that local radio station WABX began playing songs from both of their albums, but it was too late. The Index reunion was never destined.
