"Not Directed Against Any Third Party”: China Pushes Back After Trump’s Canada Tariff Threat | APT

China has pushed back against U.S. pressure on Canada after President Donald Trump threatened 100% tariffs if Ottawa deepens trade ties with Beijing.

Speaking at a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said China favors cooperation over confrontation and rejected what he called Washington’s “Cold War mentality.” He stressed that China’s growing partnership with Canada is “not directed against any third party.”

Trump warned that closer China–Canada relations would put Canada at risk, accusing Beijing of seeking to dominate its economy. Guo also addressed U.S. criticism of China’s role in Central America, calling claims of malign influence “utter lies and fallacies.”

The briefing also touched on China’s stance on Myanmar’s recent elections, U.S. withdrawal from the World Health Organization, and broader geopolitical tensions.
