What was initially reported as a tragic road accident on the outskirts of Bengaluru has now been reclassified as murder, following a detailed police investigation and a complaint filed by the victim’s mother.

The incident occurred on Sunday evening around 8.30 pm in the Kammasandra area, under the Hebbagodi police station limits of Anekal taluk. The deceased has been identified as Prashanth (28), a resident of Veerasandra. The accused is Roshan Hegde (27), a resident of KR Puram.

According to police, Prashanth and Roshan had gathered near M5 Mall after attending a local cricket match and were consuming alcohol when an argument broke out. Investigators said the dispute allegedly began over a cigarette lighter and escalated into a violent confrontation, during which both men reportedly attacked each other with beer bottles. Roshan sustained serious injuries, including a severe injury to his tongue.

As tensions rose, Roshan attempted to leave the spot in his car. Prashanth tried to stop him and held on to the vehicle’s door, hanging outside as the car moved. Instead of stopping, Roshan allegedly drove recklessly along the Veerasandra–Kammasandra road.

Electronic City Division DCP Narayan said dashboard camera footage revealed that the accused deliberately rammed the car into a tree and later into a compound wall in an apparent attempt to dislodge Prashanth. The impact caused fatal head injuries to Prashanth.

Although the emergency helpline 112 was initially informed of a crash, police said analysis of the dashcam footage and steering patterns indicated clear intent, leading them to alter the case from rash and negligent driving to murder. The accused was taken into custody within an hour of the incident and is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

Prashanth’s mother, Anu, alleged that her son was intentionally killed and not a victim of an accident. She said the family had recently built a new house and was planning his wedding in two months. “If he made a mistake, he could have been warned. He did not deserve to be killed,” she said, demanding strict action.

Based on her complaint, Hebbagodi police have registered a murder case under Section 302 of the IPC. Prashanth’s body has been shifted to St John’s Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police said further investigation is underway to establish the full sequence of events and motive behind the crime.
