KMT Sends Delegation To China For Cross-Strait Exchange

Taiwan’s main opposition party, the Kuomintang, has sent a delegation to China for a think tank exchange with the Chinese Communist Party. The group will be in Beijing from Feb. 2-4 with the forum set to convene on Feb. 3.

KMT Vice Chair Hsiao Hsu-tsen will lead the delegation along with 40 other academics. The KMT says the exchange is set to focus on tourism, environmental protection and industrial development.

But the visit is sparking debate in Taiwan. The ruling Democratic Progressive Party has criticized the forum, saying it will harm national dignity and security. Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council also commented on the upcoming forum, warning that the CCP’s goal is to eliminate Taiwan, which will not change through visits to Beijing.
