Cubans in Havana on alert due to cold front with high waves, coastline floodings

Cubans faced unusually cold weather on Sunday, February 1, with maximum temperatures not exceeding 15 degrees Celsius in Havana, where winds and waves caused coastal flooding along the city's shoreline. On the iconic Malecon in the Cuban capital, waves averaging 3 to 4 meters high began to affect low-lying areas on Saturday night, when Civil Defense authorities evacuated vulnerable people and ordered them to take the recommended measures to protect their belongings. The Cuban Institute of Meteorology warned this week that a mass of dry, cold air of Arctic origin would enter Cuba, reinforcing the winter conditions that have already existed in the country for days. The official record low temperature recorded in Cuba is 0.6 degrees Celsius (33.08 F) and took place on February 18, 1996, in the town of Bainoa, Mayabeque province.
