Soldiers and swarms of snow ploughs battled to clear record-breaking snow that has buried northern Japanese cities as the death toll from winter storms ticked up to 30 people on Tuesday (Feb 3).
In Aomori, a city at the northern tip of Japan's main Honshu island, troops from Japan's Self-Defense Forces helped clear snow from rooftops and pavements as authorities struggled to cope with the heaviest snowfall seen in four decades.
