राष्ट्रीय स्वयंसेवक संघ के प्रमुख मोहन भागवत ने रविवार को कहा कि अगर स्वतंत्रता सेनानी विनायक दामोदर सावरकर को भारत रत्न से सम्मानित किया जाता है, तो भारत रत्न की प्रतिष्ठा बढ़ेगी। आरएसएस चीफ के इस बयान पर एआईएमआईएम सांसद और अध्यक्ष असदुद्दीन ओवैसी ने जमकर निशाना साधा है। तेलंगाना के महबूबनगर में एक जनसभा को संबोधित करते हुए असदुद्दीन ओवैसी ने कहा, “भारतीय जनता पार्टी वाले एक ऐसे व्यक्ति को भारत रत्न देने की मांग कर रहे हैं जिसने अंग्रेजों को छह दया याचिकाएं लिखीं। जस्टिस कपूर थे, सुप्रीम कोर्ट के चीफ जस्टिस ऑफ इंडिया। इन्होंने महात्मा गांधी की हत्या के बाद कमीशन बनाया था। क्या जस्टिस कपूर ने नहीं कहा था कि ये शख्स गांधी की हत्या में साजिशकर्ता था। जिसने गांधी की हत्या की साजिश की आप उसको बोल रहे हो मुबारक हो। एक ऐसा वक्त आएगा एक दिन इस देश में गोडसे को भी बीजेपी वाले भारत रत्न दे देंगे।”

Addressing a public meeting in Mahbubnagar, Telangana, Asaduddin Owaisi said, “The Bharatiya Janata Party is demanding the Bharat Ratna for a man who wrote six mercy petitions to the British. There was Justice Kapoor, the Chief Justice of India of the Supreme Court. He headed the commission formed after Mahatma Gandhi's assassination. Didn't Justice Kapoor say that this man was a conspirator in Gandhi's murder? You are congratulating someone who conspired in Gandhi's assassination. A time will come when the BJP will even give the Bharat Ratna to Godse.”
