लोकसभा स्पीकर ओम बिरला के खिलाफ विपक्ष द्वारा अविश्वास प्रस्ताव लाने की तैयारी ने संसद की राजनीति को गरमा दिया है। कांग्रेस सांसदों के अनुसार, प्रस्ताव का नोटिस देने से पहले विपक्षी दल आवश्यक सांसदों के हस्ताक्षर जुटा रहे हैं। विपक्ष का आरोप है कि स्पीकर सदन की कार्यवाही में निष्पक्ष नहीं हैं और जानबूझकर नेता प्रतिपक्ष राहुल गांधी को बोलने का अवसर नहीं दिया जा रहा। कांग्रेस का कहना है कि जहां विपक्षी सांसदों की आवाज दबाई जा रही है, वहीं सत्तारूढ़ बीजेपी के सांसदों को खुलकर बोलने की छूट है। इसी मुद्दे को लेकर लोकसभा में लगातार हंगामा हुआ, जिसके चलते कार्यवाही कई बार स्थगित करनी पड़ी। कांग्रेस के साथ शिरोमणि अकाली दल और अन्य विपक्षी दलों ने भी स्पीकर की भूमिका पर गंभीर सवाल उठाए हैं। हालांकि, एनडीए के पास स्पष्ट बहुमत होने के कारण इस प्रस्ताव के भविष्य को लेकर सियासी बहस तेज हो गई है।
