White emergency ambulances are being introduced across north-east England in a move designed to save money. The North East Ambulance Service says switching to white paint will save about one thousand pounds per vehicle, as white is a standard factory colour, while yellow requires specialist painting. The service has ordered seventy-five white ambulances, with sixty-six expected to be on the road in the coming year. It says the aim is eventually to make the entire fleet all white. Chief operating officer Stephen Segasby said the change would "not affect safety", adding that "there is no evidence that either colour is more or less visible or more likely to be involved in an accident".
