A frantic baby elephant’s cries sparked an extraordinary rescue as its mother and herd worked together to free it from a tree.
De Charisma Chriss, a professional Safari guide, captured the dramatic moment in Arusha, Tanzania.
He had stopped to watch a herd of elephants when he noticed a calf playing nearby. Suddenly, the young elephant became trapped between three tree trunks and began calling out for help.
The mother quickly reacted. Together with other elephants, she tried lifting the calf with their trunks and legs, but their first attempts failed.
After pausing briefly, the elephants changed tactics and broke part of the tree, finally managing to free the baby.
De Charisma Chriss, who has been a professional guide for 10 years, said it was something he had never witnessed before.
Guests on the drive described it as the highlight of their trip and an unforgettable experience.
He said: “It’s a beautiful day when I came across a great sighting. I was going back to the lodge when I came across a beautiful sighting of elephants. I had to stop and watch them.
“While I was watching, the baby was playing. Suddenly, he got stuck between the three trunks.
"He cried to make the call for help. The mother noted that and they went to help.
“They tried by lifting it up and pick it up with the legs and the trunks but it wasn’t work good enough to get the baby out. They paused for a minute and they broke that tree to rescue the baby.
“When we left the sighting, the guests mentioned that was the highlight of the trip and an unforgettable memory experience.
“What I would say, we don’t need to underestimate the animals. These animals are clever and smarter and intelligent than what we think.”
