Màelstrom — Màelstrom 1973 (USA, Progressive Rock)

"We thank Soft Machine, Stravinsky, Gustav Holst, Gentle Giant, Henry Cow, Yes, and our own insatiable thirst for experimentation for inspiration." The author of the acknowledgment is multi-instrumentalist Robert Williams, known in certain circles under the pseudonym Roberts Owen. He is credited with forming one of the best American prog bands of the 1970s. Màelstrom formed in Florida, but the hot climate there had virtually no effect on the band's music. On the contrary, the capacious, formatted opuses of these "Americans" are characterized by a misty, northern mystique. It's no coincidence that they named themselves after a powerful whirlpool off the coast of Norway. The album was originally released in Canada in 1973 under the title "On the Gulf."
