Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh): Tension prevailed in Mirpur Hindu village following clashes between protesting farmers and police over the construction of a proposed dumping ground near Techno City under the limits of Loni Police Station.
Protest Over Environmental Concerns:
Farmers and villagers have been opposing the dumping ground project for several weeks, alleging that it would lead to severe environmental pollution and increase the risk of disease in the area.
On Sunday, when administrative and municipal teams arrived to begin work at the site, a large number of male and female farmers gathered and began raising slogans against the project.
Police Action and Injuries:
According to eyewitnesses, police initially attempted to persuade the protesters to disperse. However, as the situation escalated and the crowd refused to back down, police allegedly resorted to a lathi charge to disperse the gathering.
Reports claim that more than 60 farmers sustained injuries during the police action. A female farmer was seriously injured after being struck on the head and other parts of her body and was admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment.
While local accounts describe the action as a lathi charge, senior police officials have not formally confirmed this, stating that “mild force” was used to control the crowd.
Security Measures and Current Situation:
Following the incident, farmer leaders condemned the administration and intensified protests. A heavy police presence has been deployed in the village to prevent further escalation.
Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) units have also been put on alert amid ongoing tensions.
Authorities have stated that the situation is currently under control, though resentment among villagers remains high. The administration has yet to issue a detailed statement regarding the future of the proposed dumping ground project.
