The U.S. government has extended restrictive measures against Cuba, with President Donald Trump renewing for one year the executive order authorizing the detention and inspection of U.S. and foreign vessels bound for the island. The measure is part of the “national emergency with respect to Cuba,” in effect since 1996 when it was first signed by former President Bill Clinton. In response, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla denounced the decision as an energy blockade that violates sovereignty and international trade, warning that it creates “extreme conditions” for the Cuban people.
