DepEd urged not to remove music from school curriculum
Dr. Alexandra Chua, dean of the Conservatory of Music at the University of Santo Tomas, urges the Department of Education not to remove music from the basic education curriculum, warning that doing so would limit access to the arts. Speaking at a workshop for the National Arts Month celebration in Palo, Leyte, on Feb. 18, 2026, Chua said the possible removal of music and arts subjects would make the industry exclusive to those who can afford private training. Chua also expressed concern over the growing use of artificial intelligence in music production, noting that AI-generated music lacks human emotion and creativity.
