A 30-year-old software engineer, Sunitha, was brutally murdered at her residence in Green City Colony, Vanasthalipuram, on February 18, 2026. Police have arrested her ex-husband, Mahesh, describing the crime as a premeditated attack driven by personal resentment.
The Attack:
According to investigators, Mahesh barged into Sunitha’s fourth-floor flat around noon while she was working from home. Armed with knives and a sickle, he allegedly stabbed her multiple times and later struck her head with a flower pot, killing her on the spot.
After the assault, he reportedly poured petrol inside the room and locked himself in a washroom, threatening to set the flat on fire. Neighbours and family members alerted Vanasthalipuram Police, who reached the spot and negotiated his surrender.
Background & Motive:
The couple had married in 2022 and divorced in 2024. Sunitha remarried in April 2025. Police said Mahesh was unable to accept her second marriage and allegedly blamed her for the mental distress faced by him and his family.
Officials stated that Sunitha had earlier filed a domestic violence case against Mahesh in Maharashtra. A Look-Out Circular was issued, and his passport was suspended, preventing him from returning to his IT job in Canada. He had been living in Telangana’s Peddapalli district after returning to India in March 2025.
Investigators revealed that Mahesh had been tracking Sunitha’s movements through social media and had conducted reconnaissance of her apartment in recent months. CCTV footage reportedly shows him entering the building carrying a bag containing weapons and petrol.
Pregnancy Claim:
In a complaint, Sunitha’s current husband claimed she was three months pregnant at the time of her death. Police said this has not yet been confirmed and are awaiting the post-mortem report.
The accused is currently in custody. Police said further investigation is underway to establish all aspects of planning and execution of the crime.
