Despite being the world’s most powerful military force, the United States now appears to be standing on the edge of a major energy crisis. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), created to protect the country’s economy and citizens during emergencies, has dropped far below its full capacity. After the 1974 oil crisis, the U.S. built this reserve in underground caverns in Louisiana and Texas with a total capacity of about 714 million barrels. However, at present, only around 415 million barrels remain, which is enough to meet U.S. demand for roughly 20 days. During the Russia-Ukraine war, large quantities of oil were released from the reserve to control rising fuel prices, but efforts to refill the stockpile were delayed afterward. At the same time, growing tensions with Iran and potential risks around the Strait of Hormuz have further destabilized global oil markets, raising serious concerns about America’s long-term energy security.
