Alex Salmond has said a vote for the SNP is an alternative to the "decade of despair" offered by a Labour or Tory UK Government.
The Scottish Nationalist leader told supporters at the official launch of the SNP's election campaign in Leith that both Labour and the Tories would put "cherished services" at risk.
He called for voters to elect "local and national champions" on May 6.
The party would also form a Westminster alliance with the Welsh Nationalist party Plaid Cymru, Mr Salmond said.
He added: "At this election Scotland can choose champions, local and national champions. Our message is clear, on May 6 don't just vote for another politician, elect a local champion with the SNP."
