David Cameron emerged victorious in the third and final prime ministerial debate, according to most instant polls.

Research by YouGov for The Sun, the first poll to emerge, found the Tory leader had scored a decisive win, with 41 per cent saying he performed best compared to 32 per cent for Nick Clegg. Gordon Brown was trailing on 25 per cent.

But a ComRes poll for ITV News suggested the result had been much closer, putting Mr Cameron on 35 per cent to 33 per cent for Mr Clegg. Mr Brown was last again on 26 per cent.

In a Populus poll for the Times it was even tighter with Cameron and Clegg drawing on 38 per cent and Brown again behind on 25 per cent.

The anomaly was the ICM / Guardian poll. According to this, Brown came second with 29 per cent with Nick Clegg in third place on 27 per cent. Cameron was still the winner with 35 per cent.
