Eight people were killed and 12 others injured when a car involved in the California 200 off-road race drove into a crowd of spectators on Saturday night.
The accident happened shortly before 8 pm in the Lucerne Valley, a desert area about 100 miles northeast of Los Angeles. The race is called the California 200.
Authorities said a driver lost control of a vehicle during the race at a dry lake bed. It's not yet clear if the driver was hurt.
Many of the wounded were airlifted to nearby hospitals.
The tragedy is being investigated by the California Highway Patrol, which has sent its major accident investigation team to the scene.
