Michael Douglas has made his first public appearance on the red carpet since announcing he is clear from cancer.

The actor was at the Palm Springs International Film Festival with wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, where he received an Icon Award for his extensive career in Hollywood.

The 66-year-old was happy to be back in the spotlight, adding it was his family that helped get him through the cancer.

"The kids were wonderful, I took them down to radiation to understand and Catherine had the general British tradition of stiff upper lip, you just gotta get on with it."

The star announced he was suffering from stage 4 throat cancer last August and publicly confirmed he was cancer-free on January 11.

He is thought to be staying in Hollywood for the Golden Globe Awards after being nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his appearance in Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.
