The British Academy Film Awards kicked off in style with an impressive display of A-list glamour on the red carpet.

The rain failed to dampen spirits as BAFTA hopefuls signed autographs and spoke to press outside the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

Host Jonathan Ross named The Social Network and The King's Speech as his favourite films on the short list, and Sir Paul McCartney agreed.

"I like The King's Speech - that's my favourite", the legendary musician told us. "But I also like The Social Network. They use a Beatles song at the end of that, so I like that aspect of that film."

The King's Speech actress Helena Bonham-Carter looked surprisingly demure in a black dress, after her mismatched shoes split fashion critics at the Golden Globes earlier this year.
