Many people decided to leave Japan following the recent catastrophic earthquake, tsunami and leaking nuclear power plants. Though Japan was “home” for one Israeli mother, she made a decision to return to her native country where she recounts her frightening experience last week.
Avishag Ogawa, an Israeli, has lived in Japan for seven years with her Japanese husband and baby daughter Lumi at the city of Narita near Tokyo. She is now in Israel and talks about the terrible disaster that hit Japan last week.
[Avishag Ogawa, Israeli Who Fled Japan]:
“My family and I were at the park when it happened, a very intense earthquake. It was very scary, I imagine it was especially so for women with little children.”
She waited at the airport, not certain if she would be able to get a flight to Israel.
[Avishag Ogawa, Israeli Who Fled Japan]:
“Until the last moment at the airport I had no idea if I would fly or not… we sat in the airplane and felt a very-very strong earthquake. It was an experience of refugees, I have become a refugee… with two suitcases - I have no idea what I stuck in them.”
Avishag relaxes a little and describes how the Japanese people behaved in spite of the stark pictures of buildings collapsing and total devastation.
She characterized them as behaving quietly, and with restraint.
Owing to the danger of radiation, Avishag decided to return to Israel with her daughter.
[Avishag Ogawa, Israeli Who Fled Japan]:
“Concerning the nuclear reactors in Fukushima, I felt there is a very big gap in the information the media and the Japanese government provide, and the information provided in other languages, such as English and Hebrew. It was very scary, not knowing what’s going on. As soon as I heard about the explosions at the nuclear reactors, six of them, I decided I should leave Japan.”
