General Sir David Richards, Britain's new chief of the defense staff claimed on Sunday November 14th that it would be impossible to defeat al-Qaeda and the Taliban with military force. However, he stated that nullifying the Islamist Militancy is unnecessary, but instead it could be "contained" in order to allow living a secure life. Sir Richards also stated that though unconventionally, we are at war which could last up to 30 years. He warns that the global threat from al- Qaeda and its terrorist affiliates engages us in a global struggle against what he calls: "pernicious form of ideology" ant that parallels are to be made with Nazi Germany in the Second World War. As for the war in Afghanistan, Sir Richards declared that the afghan civilians are disappointed of false promises by NATO, and yet the sacrifice of the lives of 343 British soldiers was a price worth paying.
