A report writtenby former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan and heads of state, has calledfor the international community to examine options for the legalization ofsoft drugs. An international Parliamentary committee will analyze thereport in light of the fight against drugs, and set international drug policy. With this reportin mind, Member of Knesset, Dr. Einat Wilf of the Atzma'ut faction, yesterdaycalled for the establishment of a public committee to review the comparison ofthe status of soft drugs to that of alcohol and cigarettes, where their sale islegal, regulated and institutionalized. Said Wilf: "There is noquestion that drugs, like alcohol and cigarettes, are problematic anddangerous. However, the information accumulated over decades of war over drugs, shows there is room to look at soft drugs, not as a crime issue, but rather ahealth issue, like alcohol" Wilf claims thatsuch a mechanism would not only led to a decline in use of soft drugs, butalso a decrease in international crime.
